AWP is only one month away – yes, that’s right ONE MONTH AWAY, and so begins our 30 day countdown to the 2017 Conference at Washington D.C.! If you are like me, you finally booked your flight and your calendar is filling with evenings with writer friends from around the country. It is our hope that this blog will help you navigate the often wonderful and equally overwhelming thing that IS the AWP Conference!
Over the next month, expect posts about upcoming events, book signings, our favorite writers, opportunities for your involvement, as well as tips and advice for how to make the conference both memorable and productive!
Until then, mark your calenders for the follow LGBTQ Caucus Events and Activities, starting with…
The LGBTQ Caucus Annual Meeting – Thursday, 6pm-7:15pm, Room 102B, Level One, Washington Convention Center
As you probably know, the LGBTQ Caucus Meets once per year at the AWP Conference. This is a good time to
- meet your current Caucus Board Members,
- meet fellow LGBTQ Writers at the start of the conference (it’s always nice to see friendly faces as the conference continues!)
- promote and learn about future LGBTQ-centered events (be sure to bring flyers and/or other materials to help spread the word)
- network ideas for future AWP Panels (proposals are due very soon after the conference conclues!)
- express your ideas and concerns for the conference, and
- elect new board members (everyone is welcome to run!).
Add this to your Facebook Events! If you miss attending Thursday’s meeting, never fear, for you can still find us at…
The LGBTQ Writers Caucus Booth! @ Bookfair Exhibit Space 668
We are incredibly grateful for the support of our members, many of which donated money to allow us to have a physical presence at the Conference Bookfair. For those who have never been to the conference before, the bookfair can be quite overwhleming – there are hundreds and hundreds of booths, each one pushing literary magazines and MFA programs and small presses. If you are like me, they can feel quite intimidating. The one place you should feel more than happy to visit? THE LGBTQ WRITERS CAUCUS BOOTH!
Lambda Literary has graciously agreed to share a booth space with us, both to cut down costs and to help keep the booth manned. Like the Caucus meeting, we see the booth as a hub, a place where you can meet fellow queer writers, promote and find out about events, and even pick up a schedule of LGBTQ-centered panels! This year, we’ll be hosting a number of author signings, so be sure to drop by and see all that we have going on!
And finally, as a nice way to wrap up the conference, we hope you will also attend…
The Social Justice Mixer – Saturday, 6:30pm @ Scarlet Oak Room, Mezzanine Level, Marriott Marquis.
We also are very happy to announce that because of your generous support, we are also able to co-sponsor another end-of-conference MIXER.
This final AWP event is a great place to toast another successful year, connect with writers focused on social justice and inclusion, and learn about more about the LGBTQ Writers Caucus, and our co-sponsors: Lambda Literary and CantoMundo.
